The Republic was founded hundreds of years ago by refugee settlers from the Five Duchies after the collapse of the Craenid Empire. It is a diverse and prosperous nation, with citizens of many different backgrounds all working together, unified by a dream of progress and peace.
The majority of the people of The Republic are very patriotic, and love the freedom they have there. The freedom of individuals is very important, but it is sometimes superseded by the needs of the entire nation. Soldiers are usually conscripts, taxes are somewhat high (except upon the wealthiest families, who usually pay no taxes), and criminal activities often carry very high penalties - including a death sentence.

Justice is paramount, and although most inhabitants are elves, Old Sylveria welcomes all people equally.
Ruled by the Clerical Council, Owl Island is covered in isolationist monasteries, temples and seminaries.
The southernmost island of Lyre is an artistic scion, populated by poets, musicians, painters and actors. Having very little productive capacity itself, Lyre depends heavily on the coin of visitors, which they rapidly spend on importing staple goods from other islands. For most, the lifestyles on Lyre tend to be meager, bordering on ascetic. The most successful bards and artisans usually wind up in foreign lands, entertaining nobility and earning accolades - but a fraction of these success stories will return to Lyre to become professors or patrons.
These lands are are mostly safe, but may be in the middle of political turmoil. Laws may be inconsistently enforced, the economy may be suffering, or there may be occasional military conflict.

These lands are consumed by threats and challenges of all kinds. Neither travelers nor denizens can ever let their guard down. Death, torture and fear are the rule.
